System Analysis of Maize (Zae mays L.) Postproduction Mechanization in the East Java, Indonesia

(Indonesia), Doctor of Philosophy in Agricultural Engineering (University of the Philippines Los Baños)

Dissertation Abstract:

Postproduction mechanization was one of the solutions offered by government to overcome mismatch between clustered time of harvesting and monthly continuing need of maize raw material. Nevertheless, the program encountered several barriers relate to effectiveness and efficiency. The research aimed to analyze postproduction machines by characterizing the supply chain, determining the level of mechanization for each postproduction operation, and analyzing the mechanization opportunities in different levels of supply chain. The research was conducted from August 2018 to January 2019 in three maize central productions districts i.e. Kediri, Tuban, and Blitar, East Java Province, Indonesia. A survey method was done by using sets of questionnaires. Descriptive analysis, analysis of variance and t-test were utilized to know the significant differences among the collected primary and secondary data. The research showed that ten lines of distribution were found in the maize supply chain in East Java. The traders and end users involved were village level traders (PPD), subdistrict level traders (PPK), district level wholesalers (PPB) and poultries, feed millers, including dairy milk, respectively. Postproduction such as harvester and sheller, manual, and vertical dryer were utilized in farmers, PPD, PPK, and PPB, respectively. The level of postproduction mechanization was 0.68 hp ha-1 which 22% and 78% was supplied by mechanical and human power, respectively.
