Analysis of Efficiency and Institution aspect of rice farming system under Riam Kanan Irrigated Area, Banjar, South Kalimantan, Indonesia

(Indonesia), Master of Science in Agricultural Economics (Gadjah Mada University)

Abstract:

This research conducted in four villages (irrigated and non-irrigated areas) was designed to identify the impact of Riam Kanan irrigation to frequency plantation schedule, productivity of land, revenue efficiency (use of the means of production), and institution aspect in rice farming system.

Random sampling of 80 farmers (irrigated) and 40 farmers (non-irrigated) was carried out in each village. T-test and regression analysis method according to Cobb- Douglas were used to analyze the frequency of plantation schedule, productivity of land, and revenue efficiency. Qualitative analysis with indicator value was conducted for the institution aspect.

Results revealed that frequency plantation schedule, productivity, and revenue in irrigated areas were higher than in non-irrigated areas (first planting session). Results of the analysis on the function of production indicated that the value of technical efficiency rating (TER) in the first planting session (0.9958) was higher than the second planting session (0.9873) in irrigated area. The TER in non-irrigated area was 0.9829.

Results of the analysis on the institution aspect indicated that irrigation treatment was rated good; network physical need of water, good; maintenance irrigation drains, bad; agricultural extension, bad; and drainage system, bad.
