Comparative Study on Rooting of Para Rubber Cuttings

(Vietnam), Master of Science (University of the Philippines Los Baños)

Thesis Abstract:

Three main experiments were conducted to compare the rooting ability as well as the physiological basis of rooting of cuttings taken from five clones, seedling trees and young seedling of Para rubber. Various growth regulators at different concentrations were applied to the cuttings.

Results showed that cuttings from clonal and seedling trees always failed to root, while young seedling cuttings successfully rooted with or without the application of growth regulators. Growth regulators such as NAA, IBA and Quercetin at concentrations of 200 ppm or lower, enhanced both rooting ability and root-formation capacity of young seedling cuttings, while Alar at concentrations of 500 ppm or higher reduced root formation.

Leaf extracts from young Para rubber seedlings contained more root-promoting than root-inhibiting substances, while the reverse was true in the case of those from Para rubber trees. Moreover, root-inhibiting sibstances in young seedling leaves were less than those in the leaves of either clonal or seedling trees.

The total available carbohydrates in leaves of young seedling cuttings were higher than those in either clonal or seedling tree cuttings. However, the total available carbohydrate content of stems of seedling cuttings did not significantly differ from that in stems of clonal and seedling tree cuttings.

Rooting variation in Para rubber cuttings was due to the physiological age of parent trees, rather than to the difference in clones.
