Design Parameters of a Laboratory Rice Stripper Using Transverse Belt

(Vietnam), Master of Science (University of the Philippines Los Baños)

Thesis Abstract:

A laboratory stripper model was constructed to study the possibility of stripping rice with the use of a transverse belt. The effect of various factors affecting the performance was also studied.

The setup consisted of the trolley, the threshing belt and the concave. The trolley carrying the rice plants moved toward the threshing belt, thus simulating the forward travel in a field machine. The transverse threshing belt was fitted with wire loop (which gave a combing action on the rice plants) and ran around two PVC rollers in a direction perpendicular to the trolley motion. The concave was fitted with flexible flaps to turn up the panicles evenly.

Tests with the IT1561 rice variety showed that the threshing efficiency was affected by the forward speed, the belt speed and the belt width. At high belt speed (6 m/s), the forward speed had no significant effect on the threshing efficiency, which averaged 96.5%. The same tread was observed with the collecting efficiency. A supplementary test with some design modifications resulted in a maximum collecting efficiency 93%.
