(Timor-Leste), Master of Science in Agricultural Education (University of the Philippines Los Baños)

Thesis Abstract:

This study was undertaken to determine the extent of integration of agricultural extension competencies (AEC) in the basic agricultural courses in selected institutions in East Timor. Specifically, it focused on the BSA and Diploma programs offered by the National University of East Timor (NUET) and East Timor Coffee Academy, respectively. The respondents of the study were the administrators, faculty members, and graduates of the BSA program and Diploma programs of the institutions identified, which totaled 70. The specific objectives of this study were to: (1) identify the agricultural extension competencies that have been integrated in the basic agricultural courses; (2) ascertain the level of integration of agricultural extension competencies; (3) determine the factors that influence the integration of agricultural extension competencies in the basic agricultural courses; and (4) analyze the relationship between the external factors, organization factors, individual factors, and integration of agricultural extension competencies in the basic agricultural courses.

Results showed that curricular programs of the institutions were not insulated from various influences because they do not exist in a vacuum. The integration of agricultural extension competencies in the agricultural courses was not able to respond positively to the various forces and factors from the external and internal environment of the institutions. External and individual factors were found to significantly affect the integration of agricultural extension competencies in the basic agricultural courses. External factors such as societal feedbacks on agricultural extension and influence from institutions provided the momentum for curriculum changes in subjects in the BSA and Diploma programs of the institutions included in this study.
