Heavy Metal Studies in Surface Sediments from the South China Sea off East Coast Peninsular Malaysia

(Philippines), Doctor of Philosophy in Coastal Management (University of the Philippines Los Baños)

Abstract:

A study on the heavy metal contents in surface sediments from the South China Sea off East Coast Peninsular Malaysia was conducted to determine the contents and patterns of distribution of heavy metals (Al, Fe, Cd, Cu, Cr, Pb, Mn, and Zn) in the study area. The surface sediments were collected from the cruise of MV SEAFDEC after the northeast monsoon. The contents of heavy metals in the study area were 1.89-7.21 percent for Al, 0.70-2.26 percent for Fe, 0.21-0.42 μg/g for Cd, 10.35- 20.55 μg/g for Cu, 21.11-83.77 μg/g for Cr, 13.49-106.69 μg/g for Pb, 145.23-472.97 μg/g for Mn, and 18.14-97.84 μg/g for Zn. The heavy metal contents were relatively low when compared with the value of the earth’s crust.
