Analysis of Rice Consumption at Household Level in Yogyakarta Special Province

(Timor-Leste), Master of Science in Agricultural Economics (Gadjah Mada University)

Thesis Abstract:

The objectives of the study were to determine the factors influencing rice consumption in urban and rural areas of Yogyakarta Special Province; and to determine the own price, cross price, and income elasticity of rice consumption at different income levels in rural and urban areas.

National Socioeconomic Survey (SUSENAS) data of 2005 Yogyakarta Special Province on rice consumption were used. Total respondents were 1,990 households. Regression model used in the analysis was ordinary least square (OLS).

Results showed that rice consumption was influenced by the price of rice itself, price of related household goods, income level, education of the mother, number of family members, and location. The factors that individually influence rice consumption varied by kinds of rice, location, and income level.

Because the demand of rice in Yogyakarta Special Province was inelastic, the change in price did not significantly influence rice demand. Generally, rice was a normal good at low income household level in the rural and urban areas while inferior good at middle income household level in the rural areas, and middle and high income household levels in the urban areas. Rice was substituted for cassava and sweet potato. Rice was also complementary to cat fish, fermented soybean cake, cassava, egg, and tofu.
