Abstract:

Field experiments were conducted with the drip irrigation method to study the effects of different rates of water application and fertilization treatments and their interaction on the curing quality of  Virginia tobacco.

The MRS3 tobacco variety, as the  test plant, was irrigated with water discharges of 2, 5 and 8/day, designed as low, medium and high irrigation, respectively. Fertilization treatments were gourped into 20, 60 and 80 kg/ha series.

Results indicated that the continous demand for assimilate was satisfied by fertilization  and prevention  of flowering resulted in a rapid growth pattern for dry matter production. The crop growth rate, net assimilation  rate and  leaf  ratio.

Manifested in the experiments was the effect of fertilization as a stabilizing agent on the  plan-water  relationship.  A relatively small fluctuation  in water content and water potential was observed ind the fertilized plants, as compared with the control. The computed water budget gave a negative balance in the 9-week-old plants.

Based on the pattern of nutrient  uptake, the highest yields resulted from treatments 80-20-60, 80-40-80, 60-20-60 and 80-40-60 with an average of 1.0 ton/ha second, from  treatments .last was the control treatment with 0.53 ton/ha.

Based on cured leaves produced, lamin percentage, quality index ans kovalenco coefficient, the highest performers were those belonging to the group with treatments and  last, the control treatment

It may be concluded from the study that when all other inputs are available , the drip method of irrigation can be used to produce satisfactory harvest however, the use of locally developed material as emitters needs further improvement
