PROJECT SAYA: Strengthening Agricultural Yield of Allium cepa L (Onion) in the Philippines
Objectives:
The overall objective of this project is to increase onion production through analysis of how strengthening and expanding the local food supply systems in the Philippines could be achieved. Specifically, this project intends to:
- Determine the present productivity and efficiency levels of local onion production;
- Identify and analyze factors affecting production; and
- Provide macro and micro (farm-level, farmer-groups) recommendations on the potential interventions and innovations to intensify onion production.
Project Scope
There are three types of bulb onion grown in Luzon, namely: red onions (red creole and red Pinoy), white/yellow onions (granex), and shallot/multiplier, which is locally called Sibuyas Tagalog. Specifically, this project will focus its analysis on yellow onions (granex).
In terms of production, Central Luzon shares’ in total onion production was 62.5%, followed by Ilocos Region (17.48%), and MIMAROPA (15.78%) (Figure 2). Each province will be represented in the study and will involve JGF’s partner onion producers as its primary study sites specifically in Ilocos Sur and Occidental Mindoro.
