(Thailand), Master of Science in Extension Education (University of the Philippines Los Baños)

Thesis Abstract:

The research sought to examine the farming practices and extension support provided to asparagus contract growers in Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand. The objectives were to: (1) describe the profile of the respondents, (2) discuss the extension support system along the production and post -production phase provided to the growers, (3) identify the farming practice adopted of contract grower, (4) examine the perceived benefits of the growers from contract farming, and (5) recommend an extension support system model for asparagus farming.

The study utilized both primary and secondary data to explore the extension support system in asparagus contract farming. Purposive sampling was used to select the 44 respondents of this study. Key informant interviews were likewise conducted. Primary data gathered from the survey and interviews were complemented by secondary data. A structured interview schedule was used for gathering data. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistical tools such as percentages, means, standard deviation, and ranges.

Majority of the respondents received information and technology update mostly from neighbors. Government and private extension workers extend support through trainings, demonstrations, and seminars. Also, majority of the respondents adopted the recommended farming practice with irrigation and pruning practices least adopted. There were problems in pest and disease management mainly due to difficulty in accessing the biopesticide. Nonetheless, farmers were highly satisfied with the extension support received from extension work and they enjoyed better economic benefits.

Recommendations revolved around improving specific management practices and conduct of basic research. In contract growing, the role of extension workers shifts from providing information to monitoring adherence to quality standard, negotiating prices for farmers, and exploring market partnerships with other countries and companies.
