Effect of soil tillage to soil characterization on Southern Slope Merapi Mountain, Sleman District, Yogyakarta

(Timor-Leste), Master of Science in Soil Science (Gadjah Mada University)

Thesis Abstract:

The study aimed to determine the effects of soil tillage to soil characterization on soil physical properties, soil chemical properties, and soil mineralogy properties. Soil profiles were determined based on geology map, soil map, and land tillage map with parent material volcanic ash and order of soil as Inceptisol subgroup of Andic Dystrudept. Soil characterizations in southern slope of Merapi Mountain mostly have three systems of soil tillage, namely: non soil tillage, minimum soil tillage, and conventional soil tillage. The results of the study showed that more intensively made soil tillage reduced soil fertility for plants. Land use basically to plant growth condition to Oryza sativa and Salaccae on soil tillage can impact the physical and chemical properties but not significantly impact the mineralogical properties. Results of XRD by each horizon revealed none showing clay mineral crystalline as kaolinite or halloysite but with amorphous mineral allophane (Al2 O32SiO2 2H2O). The order of soil on the research area based on different systems of soil tillage is family Andic Dystrudept, Amorphic, Isohipertermic.
