Level and structure of innovation adoption in beef cattle farming of Cooperative Café Timor’s aid in Timor-Leste

Thesis Abstract:

Introduction of technology to cattle rising had been recommended to the farmers by the official of Cooperative Café Timor. However, from various kinds of technology recommended to the farmers for cattle, there were still few amounts of these technologies adopted entirely by the farmers that have certain characteristics. The objectives of this research were to identify local innovation technology recommended for farmers, determine the socioeconomic factors that influence innovation adoption, and analyze the structure of innovation adoption of cattle farmers. This research used survey method initiated from August to December 2008. Ninety farmers from three villages, namely: Gugurleur, Gisu, and Fatuboro, located in Maubara Subdistrict, Liquica, served as the respondents.
 
The results of this research showed that the experience of farmers and contribution of cattle business income to familial income significantly (p = .01) influence the adoption of technology by positive coefficient. Educational level, total of familial burden, and time allocation did not significantly influence the adoption of technology. As much 52.7 percent of the adoption of technology can be collectively explained by factors influencing this research. The sources of innovation information were the government, private sector, universities/academe, and colleagues of peasants.
