Development of biosecurity model for small-scale chicken production in Thai Nguyen Province, Vietnam

(Vietnam), Doctor of Philosophy in Animal Science (University of the Philippines Los Baños)

Dissertation Abstract:

The study was conducted in two districts of Thai Nguyen Province, Vietnam to look into the management and biosecurity practices of small-scale chicken procedures, effects of biosecurity practices technologies on the productivity of chickens, and changes in farmers’ perception. The results showed that free-range raising appeared to be the most common practice in general. The production performance of chicken was low with high mortality rate and poor FCR. In general, few biosecurity measures were implemented in chicken farms. As small-scale farmers, some of them did not only raise chicken but other animals as well, and did not practice separation and fencing. Almost all respondents said that they do not use protective measures when in contact with their chicken and very few carry out disinfection of equipment and
premises. There was a significant difference on the type of model of the livability rate, final bodyweight, feed consumption, feed conversation ratio, performance  index, and direct costs of the crossbred chickens F1 (? Ri × ? Sasso). Biosecurity model had higher performance than non-biosecurity model. Biosecurity technologies had influenced farmers’ perception in raising chickens. Demonstrated model was an effective way to transfer technology to the farm level.
