An Opinion Analysis of Farmer Group's Role in Agricultural Resources Management on Coastal Lands in Thailand

(Thailand), Doctor of Philosophy in Tropical Agriculture (Kasetsart University)

Dissertation Abstract:

Most of the farmer groups committee were male, about 51 years old, and had completed elementary school. Individual families had personal land ownership of about 4.64 hectares for various agricultural activities such as orchard, paddy field, coconut, vegetable, para rubber, field crops, fish, and shrimp raising, etc. Most of them had funds of their own. In the performance of agriculture activities, rainfall and natural water resources are necessary. From agriculture activities, a family earned an average annual income of THB90,992 from fisheries, THB75,953 from crops, and THB27,847 from livestock. Rainfall, product varieties, capital, and farmer group systems were the factors which had the highest influence on their agriculture activities. In general, the farmer group roles in natural resources and environment management included the following: providing support for people participation on mangrove forest protection, motivating people to clean water resources, prohibiting the disposal of garbage and offensive waste material on public places, and studying the label of chemical pesticides and strictly follow the instruction instructions. All the independent variables, physical factors, biological factors, economic factors and social factors were found significantly related to soil resources management.

From the findings of this study, it was recommended that pertinent government sectors should provide opportunities to increase farmer group participation in community-based coastal resources management activities as community-centered development paradigm.
