The Impact of Riam Kanan Irrigation Project to Product and Farm Income in South Kalimantan

(Indonesia), Master of Science in Agricultural Economics (Gadjah Mada University)

Abstract:

One of the development projects in Indonesia funded by the Japanese government was Riam Kanan Irrigation Project in South Kalimantan. The project was expected to improve people’s standard of living in the project area by increasing rice production and harvest area.

The aims of this research were to (1) know the difference of input used in irrigated and non-irrigated areas, (2) know the farm production and the factors that influence rice farming in irrigated and non-irrigated areas, (3) compare the income level of rice farming in the research area, and (4) analyze the factors that influence the income level of rice farming in irrigated and non-irrigated areas.

This research was limited during the 1998/1999 planting season. Table analysis and Cobb-Douglas function with ordinary least square (OLS) were used to analyze data.

The results of the study showed that input used for superior paddy was higher in non-irrigated area than in irrigated area. In planting season I, the average local paddy production per household in non-irrigated area was higher than in irrigated area, while the average superior paddy production in irrigated area was higher than in non-irrigated area. There was no difference in the paddy production between irrigated and non-irrigated areas.

Income of local paddy per hectare for planting season I in non-irrigated area was higher than in irrigated area, while income of superior paddy per hectare in irrigated area was higher than in non-irrigated area. There was no difference in the income between irrigated and non-irrigated areas.
