Establishment of a Resource Information System for ASCOT Reservation Area in Aurora Province, Philippines
Thesis Abstract:
The study was conducted to develop forest resource databases for Aurora State College of Technology (ASCOT) reservation area, correlate the distribution of resources along the gradients of the environment, and recommend appropriate management schemes deemed necessary to develop the area.
The study produced databases from the results of the data sourcing and inventory. In terms of species composition, floristic composition analysis showed that species of Dipterocarpaceae dominates the area. The presence of lesser-used species was the evidence of the past logging operations that opened gaps for the emergence of these species. Vegetation analysis by principal components showed no relative correlation between species composition and variants of environment like elevation, slope, and soils.
The faunal assessment revealed that most of the species were endemic to the Philippines while three bird species were identified as near threatened. A simple geographic information system (GIS) analysis was used to identify areas for conservation and management. Appropriate management schemes were formulated for the area using the criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management that were identified based on the results of the study.
The study recommended database creation to form a resource information system (RIS) to ensure sustainable production of forest produce without impairing ecological stability.
