The Effect of Soil Tillage and Type of Organic Fertilizer on Growth and Yield of Arabica Coffee (Coffea arabica)

(Timor-Leste), Master of Science in Agronomy (Gadjah Mada University)

Thesis Abstract:

The study aimed to know the effect of soil tillage and type of organic fertilizer on the growth and yield of Arabica coffee tree, and to estimate the dose of organic fertilizer combination with suitable soil tillage that could increase the yield of Arabica coffee tree. The study was carried out in P.T. Pagilaran, Batong Regency, from October 2004 to February 2005.

The study used factorial design arranged in a randomized complete block design. The first factor was soil tillage, which consisted of three sections; namely, zero tillage (O), minimum soil tillage (M), and maximum soil tillage (P). The second factor was type of organic fertilizer, which consisted of four sections; namely, without fertilizer (O), residue of foliage (S), tea dust (A), and cow manure (K). From the combination of these two factors, there were 12 combinations of treatments each repeated three times.

Results showed that soil tillage increased soil N-total content and soil C-organic. Soil tillage did not influence the growth of coffee. Application of organic fertilizer particulary cow manure and tea dust stimulated plant growth. Soil tillage and application of organic fertilizer did not influence the yield of coffee.
