Accessibility to Economic Activities Using Geographic information Systems in DKI Jakarta Province

(Indonesia), Master of Science in Information Technology for Natural Resources Management (Bogor Agricultural University)

Thesis Abstract:

The study appraised accessibility to economic activities for different socioeconomic groups, with specific reference to work trip in Jakarta Metropolitan City. The study was conducted in three parts: (1) review of the theoretical aspect of accessibility and its measurement, (2) primary and secondary data collection, and (3) accessibility analysis to appraise the level of accessibity.

Results of the analysis showed that high-income areas were located around the main centers of primary activity (CPA) as well as Glodok Primary Center, Tanah Abang Primary Center, Kuningan Sudirman and Casablanca Trade Center, and Mangga Dua Trade Center. Investigation of distribution of economic activities showed that the city has experienced decentralization. Travel pattern of commuters in two sample areas revealed that bus, rail, and taxi were the available modes of public transport mostly used by low- and middle-income suburbs. The use of multimodal transport was not found in the study area. High-income suburbs were highly dependent on car.

Among the three income groups, high-income suburbs can access the highest number of activities. The results of the study strengthened the argument that there is imbalance in distribution of activities. Provision of integrated fare structure may improve the accessibility especially for low- and middle-income suburbs. Pedestrian accessibility results highlighted how activities concentrate in CPA. Transportation was not the sole factor affecting accessibility. Distribution of activities influenced accessibility as well.
