Farm Youth Commitment in Agriculture Project in the State of Selangor and Factors Associated

(Malaysia), Master of Science in Extension Education (Universiti Pertanian Malaysia)

Thesis Abstract:

Farm youth commitment in agriculture projects is important in order to meet the nation's food supply. Studies have shown that farm youths seem to lose interest in farming as a career and only a few are currently involved in agriculture. Thus, their profile and attitude toward agriculture should be identified in relation to their commitment to agricultural projects.

Generally, this study aimed to determine the commitment level of farm youths in agricultural projects. The study was conducted in Selangor State, Malaysia. Data were gathered by randomly selecting 140 respondents. Findings of the study revealed that the level of commitment of farm youths was found to be significantly related to the duration of projects, income, and needs achievement, which contributed 47 percent of the variability in the level of commitment while two percent was attributed to personality traits.

It was concluded that individual internal aspects of motivation (e.g., needs achievement and personality traits) were important indicators in determining the level of commitment among youths. Income, level of education, duration of projects, and encouragement by family were supporting factors. Land ownership did not contribute to the increase in the level of commitment.

The study suggested that farm youths and their most immediate family should be made aware of farm entrepreneurship. On top of this, the government should help to change the public's perception about farming as a career and to allocate a piece of land as production center in every state.
