Career Advancement Factors Among Women Academics in Universities in Bengkulu City, Southwest Sumatra, Indonesia
Field Study Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the variables that predict the career advancement objective among women academics in universities in Bengkulu City, Southwest Sumatra, Indonesia. Statistical tool used in this study was canonical correlation analysis. Demographics, job credential, work situation, and career strategy were employed as independent variables while functional level and income level of respondents were the objective career advancement (dependent variables).
As a whole model, it was found that networking, educational degree, and current position of spouse were significant variables, which positively predicted income level as one of the career advancement objective.
As an individual model, educational degree and current position of spouse were significant demographic variables, which negatively predicted functional level as one of the career advancement objective. Furthermore, communication skill (English proficiency) was significant of job credential factor, which positively predicted income level as one of the career advancement objective. However, mentoring (as one of work situation factors), networking, and hard work as career strategy variables were statistically significant but not practically significant in predicting income level as one of the career advancement objective among women academics.
Furthermore, results showed that income level had negative correlation with the functional level as the career advancement objective.
To help the women academics in their career advancement objective, it is recommended for the universities to increase the salary level, provide trainings and seminars about networking, and provide scholarships for further education.
