Factors Associated with People's Participation in the Community Forestry Development Project in Nakhon Ratchasima, Northeast Thailand

(Thailand), Master of Science in Forestry (University of the Philippines Los Baños)

Thesis Abstract:

This study was conducted to find out: 1) how people participate in the Community Forestry Development (CFD) Project; 2) the people's attitudes toward and expectations of the projects; and 3) the factors (socioeconomic-demographic, physiological, physical, and administrative) that relate significantly to people's participation in the project.

Data were gathered from 180 respondents in six CFD Projects in Nakhon Ratchasima using a structured interview schedule. The general findings were described by frequency count percentages, means, and standard deviation while the chi-square and Pearson Product-Moment Correlation were employed to determine the relationship between variables studied.

ResuIts showed that most of the respondents participated in the CFD Projects. The respondents had "high" participation in decisionmaking but " low" participation in implementation. Educational attainment, family income, size of farm, land tenure status, occupation, benefit expectations, attitudes toward the personnel characteristics, accomplishment of the project, di stance from house/village to the project area, technical assistance, and extension services were significantly related with the respondents' participation in decision-making. On the other hand, attitudes toward the objectives of the project, personnel characteristics, accessibility approach, technical assistance, and extension services were significantly related with the respondents' participation in implementation.
