(Indonesia), Master of Science in Agricultural Economics (Universitas Gadjah Mada)

Abstract:

The study described women's participation in the Tea Local Smallholder-Nucleus Estate Scheme, the factors that influenced and the problems encountered in its development. It was conducted in Satang Regency, Central Java using survey and in-depth study methods. Data of 75 household samples were analyzed through Proportional Test and Path Analysis.

Results revealed that the majority of the women significantly took a part in the scheme. According to the respondents' nature of activities, both husband and wife had equal rights in decision-making. Women spent about 1,032.33 hr/year (2.83 hr/day) for their tea plantation, most of it for harvesting activ ities (93.07%).

The benefits that women obtained from the scheme included: 1) better knowledge and skills in harvesting, fertilizing, weeding, pruning, and cleaning mildew; and 2) improved decision-making skills, especially in harvesting schedule and marketing. The women's idea contribution and benefit usage of the scheme were directly influenced by their perception toward it, but were indirectly influenced by characteristics and value orientation. The husbands' perception toward the involvement of their wives in the scheme was directly influenced by the amount of the time they spent outside their tea plantation, perception toward the Scheme, and the couples' value orientation. It was indirectly influenced by the size of their tea plantation. The positive response of women toward the scheme can be further developed using group participatory approach. This can be done using several traditional meetings such as Selapanan.
