Development of Stand Growth Model and Alternative Harvesting Schemes in Indonesia

(Indonesia), Master of Science in Forest Resource Management (University of the Philippines Los Baños)

Thesis Abstract:

The Indonesian Selective Logging System is a guideline applied by most forest concession holders in managing the tropical rain forests of Indonesia. Problems concerning the systems capability to guarantee future forests cropped up because of some ofthe system's requirements that can hardly be met in practical situations.

The system can be best evaluated through projection analysis. A stand growth model derived using the Leslie Matrix principle was considered to be the most compatible with Indonesian tropical forests.

The operationalization of the growth model was recommended based on data taken from three concession areas in East Kalimantan Stand structures were projected in the study and the performance of Indonesian Selective Logging System was evaluated at the end of the cutting cycle.

It was observed that the forest had a lower volume of harvest after the second cutting cycle.

Mathematical programming technique was used for more comprehensive evaluation of the system. Alternatives in the harvesting scheme were presented and discussed.
