Factors Associated with the Adoption of Applied Nutrition Program (ANP) in a Malaysian Mukin
Thesis Abstract:
The study sought mainly to determine some socioeconomic factors assoiciated with the adoption of ANP practices, and the chief reasons for non-adoption.
Data were collected by interviewing 130 household heads in six selected villages in Kuala Langat District, Selangor, West Malaysia. Descriptive statistics, Pearson's product-moment correlation and stepwise multiplte regression were used to analyze the data.
Findings indicated that out of 15 recomended ANP practices, those pertaining to health generally had a higher level of adoption than those involving food production.
Five socioeconomic variables, namely, educational attainment, family size, age, attitud and club membership were found significantly related to the level of adoption of ANP practices, implying that these are important variables to consider in planning and implementing any rural development program. Not significanlty associated with the adoption of ANP practices were length of residence, attendance in meeting, visiting places, family income, size of cultivated land, occupation of husband and wife and subsidy materials received by the villagers.
The most common reasons for non-adoption of some ANP practices were lack of resoucers such as labor, capital, area and time; unfavorable attitude arissing from lack of interest and knowledge or understanding of the program; and enviromental factors such as poor soil, incidence of pests and diseases, and unsuitable site.
