Nematicidal Properties of Some Root Extracts on Meloidogyne incognita

(Vietnam), Master of Science (University of the Philippines Los Baños)

Thesis Abstract:

Root extracts of 17 plant species were tested against Meloidogyne incognita Chitwood to assess their nematicidal properties.

Results indicated promising effectiveness of 11 of these species, namely: Tagetes erecia, Chromolaena odorata, Mimosa pudica, Cynodon dactylon, Eragrostis tenella, Centrosema pubescens, Crotalaria spectabilis, Portulaca oleracae, Moringa pterygosperma, Leucoena leucocephala and Derris elliptica. Their root extracts were as effective as the nematicide Fumazone 75 E. C. (DBCP) at 300 ppm in controlling the nematode. Eggs and larvae of M. incognita that were immersed in pure root extracts of these plants for 4 days failed to infect roots of 3-week-old tomato seedlings.

A dilution of 1:10 root extracts of T. erecta, C. odorata, M. pudica, C. spectabilis, P. oleracae, M. pterygosperma, L. leucocephala and D. elliptica still effectively controlled the nematode. The effect was comparable to that of the nematicide Fumazone 75 E.C. at 300 ppm.

However, when the pure root extracts of the 17 plant species were applied as soil drench, their effectiveness in controlling the nematode was much lower than that of Fumazone.
