The Interaction of Fiber Type, Resin Solid and Wax Content on the Quality of Multi-functional Fiber-Overlaid Plywood .
Thesis Abstract:
The mechanical properties of fiber-overlaid plywood panels made of different types of fiber mats from sugarcane bagasse, rice straw and kaatoan bangkal were determined by subjecting them to varying levels of resin and wax contents. A total of 225 panels, 12’ x 12 ‘, varying levels of fiber-overlaid plywood from different treatments were tested for glue bond quality, hardness static bending strength and water absorption and swelling Effectiveness and relative contribution to variation on fiber type, resin solid and wax contents were statistically analyzed.
Result indicate that resin content had the greatest effect on vacuum-pressure shear strength or bond quality and on water adsorption of fiber-overlaid plywood panels. While fiber type had the greatest effect on hardness and on static bending strength in terms of modulus of elasticity (MOE) and Moduulus of rupture (MOR).
The study further demonstrated that the properties of fiber-overlaid plywood panels made of sugarcane bagasse fiber with 12 to 16% resin content and 1.0 to 1.5% wax content gave more satisfactory results than those made of rice straw and Kaatoan bangkal fibers.
