Impacts of climate change adaptation on farm economic performance among rice and vegetable producing households in Nong Cong District, Thanh Hoa Province, Vietnam
Dissertation Abstract:
The general objective of this study is to assess the impact of climate change adaptation on farm economic performance among rice and vegetable producing households in Nong Cong district, Thanh Hoa province, Vietnam. Based on a random sample of 260 rice and vegetable farming households in Thang Long and Thang Binh communes, the study found that there are three adaptation measures being commonly used in rice and vegetable production. These are adjustment of seasonal calendar, application of more fertilizer and pesticide, and changing of variety. Among rice farmers, adapting to climate change results in 19% increase in average yield, 27% increase in cost, 38% increase in revenue, and 63% increase average in profit. In vegetable production, the use of adaptation measures leads to an average cost increase in cost by 25%, revenue by 32%, and profit by 39%. The positive impact on farm profit was due to reduced cost of remediating the effects of extreme weather effects, increase in yield. The above estimates were arrived at by employing the propensity score matching method, detailed cost and return analysis, pairwise comparison and econometric models such as multivariate probit model, test as Mann-Kendall, and Sen slope. The findings suggest that there is still a need to enhance adaptability among farmers. This could be done by providing farmers with training programs on agricultural production techniques combined with climate change adaptation, providing weather forecast information for Nong Cong district, and promoting the role of farmers' associations in developing climate change resilience among rice and vegetable farmers.
