The Communication Variables and Adoption of Recommended Practices by Rice Farmers in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia
Thesis Abstract:
The objectives of the study were to (1) describe the general profile of farmers; and (2) determine their information-seeking behavior, exposure to communication channels, perception of recommended practices, and the relationship of these variables to adoption. This study was conducted among lowland rice farmers in the Province of Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. A total sample of 131 respondents was randomly selected from two villages: Desa Pakuli (81) and Desa Sidondo (50). Data were gathered through personal interviews with the use of an interview schedule.
Statistical analysis revealed that there was highly significant positive correlation between socio-demographic characteristics of respondents such as educational attainment, farm size, tenurial status, farming experience, income, organizational affiliation, and adoption of recommended practices. There was also significant relationship between adoption and exposure to communication channels such as print and electronic media exposure, contacts with field extension workers, cosmopoliteness, information-seeking behavior, contact with fellow farmers, and perception of recommended practices.
