Wettability and Gluability of Apitong (Dipterocarpus grandiflorus Blanco) Veneer

(Vietnam), Master of Science (University of the Philippines Los Baños)

Thesis Abstract:

Various experiments were conducted to determine the wettability and gluability of apitong veneer. Veneer sheets cut from green apitong heart-wood. 1/16 inch thick, obtained from Quezon Province, were used in the study.

Results showed that surface application of sodium hydroxide and methanol-benzene significantly increased while other treatments decreased the wettability and gluability of agapitong veneer. Acetone treatment did not produce any significant difference from the untreated veneer, Sodium hydroxide also decreased the water resistance of liquid urea formaldehyde CR-5H glue.

Apitong was found to be sensitive to heat treatment and temperature changes. Wettability and gluability of the apitong veneer sheets dried in an air-conditioned room were significantly higher than those dried in an oven or dryer. Both properties were significantly reduced by increased drying temperature.

Apitong veneer extracted with methanol-benzene greatly improved in wettability and gluability. Extraction with methanol-benzene from veneer was as effective as that from wood floor.

Sanding greatly improved the wettability and gluability of unextracted apitong veneer. However, it slightly improved the wettability but not the gluability of veneer extracted with methanol-benzene.

Exposure of apitong veneer, after sanding, in an air-conditioned room for seven days resulted in as much as 80% reduction in wettability and 25% in gluability. The decrease rate in gluability was linear while that in wettability was quadratic, with increasing time exposure.

Wettabilities determined on the loose and tight sides were not significantly different, but storing in plastic bags for 14 days decreased wettability and gluability.

All the experiments indicated a positive linear correlation between wettability and gluability.
