Effects of Cron (Zea Mays L.) and Legume (Vigna Radiata (L.) Wilczek, Arachis Hypogaea L.) Intercrops on Crop Productivity and Soil Erosion in Hilly Land
Thesis Abstract:
A two-croppig study on the influence of corn and legumes (mung bean and peanut) on crop productivity and soil erosion on hilly land was conducted in an area with 31 percent slope in Campangga, Barili, Cebu, Philippines from May 1984 to January 1985.
The effects of corn (IPB Var I), mung bean (Pagasa 3), and peanut (UPL-Pn2) planted as monocrops or as intercrops in 1:1 and 2:2 row planting combinations were evaluated. A randomized complete block design with three replications was used.
During the wet season, mung bean had poor growth and low pod setting. Peanut was viny, had low pod formation, and yielded lower than the dry season planting (first cropping).
Productivity per unit area of intercropping was generally higher than the monoculture check. Corn intercropping with mung bean in a 2:2 row planting pattern gave the highest land equivalent ratio (LER) of 1.62 during the first cropping, follwed by 1:1 corn + mung bean and 1:1 corn + peanut with LER of 1.41 and 1.29, respectively. In the second cropping, there were no significant differences in LERs among the cropping patterns.
Soil loss from corn intercropping with mung bean or peanut at 1:1 row planting pattern was lower than that of the 2:2 planting pattern and the monocrops. The 1:1 corn + peanut planting pattern minimized soil erosion better than the 1:1 corn + mung bean pattern.
